Medical device reprocessing is the FDA-regulated process of taking certain single-use devices, like IVUS and diagnostic catheters, and cleaning, testing, sterilizing, and re-certifying them so they can be safely used again. The FDA has regulated reprocessing since 2000 and holds reprocessors to the same regulatory requirements as original device manufacturers including validated cleaning and sterilization methods, functional testing, and device-specific clearances.
Reprocessed devices have to perform safe and effectively before they’re returned to circulation. Anything that doesn’t pass inspection gets pulled and never reaches a patient. For hospitals and cath labs, reprocessing is a way to cut supply costs, reduce medical waste, and keep high-quality devices in rotation, all without compromising safety.
